Hydropower is an energy source that uses the conversion of gravitational potential (owned by masses of water at high altitude) into kinetic energy in excess of a certain altitude, which kinetic energy is transformed, thanks to an alternator coupled to a turbine, into electricity.
Hydroelectric power is derived from the course of rivers and lakes through the creation of dams and penstocks. There are various types of dams: in leap power plants great heights of fall are used and they are available in mountainous regions.
